Stories to entertain (and maybe educate), from a data professional's out-of-the-city experiences

Summary

I am sure that America’s founding fathers had to be creative, had to pull together, and needed a sense of humor to get through the tough times. And I suspect that this spirit is still alive and well in America, with demanding jobs such as delivery of technology to parts of Alaska. Australia has a number of challenges, too, and I have been privileged to have had opportunities to work with some inspiring, creative and colorful larrikins (that’s Aussie slang for a “harmless, cheeky, and somewhat irreverent” person). The background setting for this session has its roots in personal experiences collected while providing IT services in some great projects spread across Australia, and is also peppered with a few personal stories. Hopefully these yarns will entertain, but more so, will also encourage participants to:

  • seek opportunities for creativity in their work and personal lives,
  • have fun along the way, and
  • strive to “cross the line together”, where the team ethics seek to treat all as valued and respected members.

Oh, and by the way, the principles will be briefly applied to our careers as data professionals.

What You Will Learn

A smorgasbord of real-life stories, many reflecting the demands of delivering technology to remote parts of Australia, will hopefully not only entertain but also inspire and challenge participants to leap outside of their comfort zone, team up with the variety of personalities life presents, and have fun along the way.
